Sixth Grade
English Language Arts and Ancient History
Reading
We will use a variety of texts including short stories and non-fiction from our district adopted text. Additionally, we will read class novels together. We will participate in Close Reading.
Students will be expected to read independently from their "just-right" book also known as an independent reading book or pleasure book. Students will complete a daily reading log to record the number of pages they read each day, and they will complete a reading reflection to report on what they read. Students will practice active reading strategies, which will enrich their reading experience.
At all times, students should have an independent reading book.
Writing
This school year, we will learn how to incorporate the 6+1 Traits into all of our writing assignments. We will have formal or informal writing assessments on a weekly basis. And while there will be fictional writing opportunities, we will emphasize the importance of including textual evidence in non-fiction responses and essays.
